Mets Closer Edwin Díaz Injures Knee During WBC Celebration
Season-ending injury likely
Diaz struck out the side in his first game since the injury
New York Mets closer Edwin Díaz struck out the side in his first game since suffering a season-ending knee injury during the 2023 World Baseball Classic (WBC). Díaz was injured while celebrating Puerto Rico's win over the Dominican Republic on Wednesday. He underwent imaging on Thursday, and the Mets announced that he had suffered a torn patellar tendon and would be out for the entire 2023 MLB season.
The Mets will now be without their closer for the entire season. Díaz was one of the best relievers in baseball last year, posting a 1.31 ERA and 32 saves in 61 appearances. He was also named to the All-Star team for the second time in his career.
The Mets will likely need to find a new closer to replace Díaz. Some of the internal candidates include Seth Lugo, Trevor May, and Brooks Raley. The Mets could also look to trade for a closer, such as Kenley Jansen or Raisel Iglesias.
