Iran intelligence chief in Lebanon
Brahim Raisi who is well known for his hostility toward Israel has been appointed as Iran's new intelligence chief in Lebanon.
The move is likely to raise tensions between the two countries, who have been at odds for decades. Iran has in the past supported armed groups in Palestine, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq and Yemen and Raisi's appointment is seen as a sign that Iran is increasing its involvement in Lebanon.
Israel is concerned that Raisi will use his position to support Hezbollah, a Lebanese Shiite group that is backed by Iran. Hezbollah is considered a terrorist organization by the United States and Israel, and has been blamed for a number of attacks against Israelis.
The appointment of Raisi is the latest in a series of moves by Iran to increase its influence in the Middle East. In recent months, Iran has also appointed new intelligence chiefs in Syria and Yemen.
